History of the Suzuki DR650 Motorcycle
The Suzuki DR650 was introduced in 1990 as a replacement for the DR600. Early models featured a kick-start mechanism and were known as the Djebel/Dakar and RS variants. In 1991, Suzuki released the first electric-start model, the DR650RSE, along with improvements to the exhaust system.
1996 marked a significant redesign with the introduction of the DR650SE, which came with electric start as standard. The engine was revamped for smoother power delivery, and the motorcycle received a more compact, lightweight design. This model established the factory option to lower seat height by 40mm for shorter riders.
Throughout the 2000s, the DR650SE maintained its fundamental design while receiving minor updates to improve reliability and manufacturing efficiency. Notable changes included upgrading to multi-layer steel base gaskets to resolve leakage issues present in earlier models.
While Suzuki has incorporated modern features like electronic fuel injection, traction control, and ABS in newer dual-sport models, they continue manufacturing the DR650 with its simpler, more robust design because riders value its durability, simplicity, and the extensive aftermarket parts availability that has developed around this iconic motorcycle.
