Tech Talk: Master of Chains

Carl discusses master link options

In this month's tech talk, Carl discusses various master link options for your chain and demonstrates a few products that make it easier to get your chain set up correctly.

While there is a common belief that rivet-style master links do a better job of holding your chain together than clip-style master links, we've found that clip-style is just as good, as long as they're correctly installed. One way of ensuring correct installation is by using a master link tool. These tools make it easy to apply even pressure to get the plate past the groove to ensure proper fit. Next, you'll want to make sure that the clip is oriented the correct way. The split end should be on the trailing side of the chain so that the centrifugal force of the turning chain does not fling the clip off at high operating speeds. Using a set of pliers with one jaw shorter than the other can make it easier to get the clip seated correctly. Lastly, you always have the option of using safety wire to keep everything secured.

Once you have your master link installed, use a chain alignment tool to ensure that your chain is straight and free of side loads. You can use the snail cam adjuster to get the chain lined up.

We also offer tools to install rivet-style master links. Make sure the o-rings are correctly placed before securing the rivets. You'll also want to make sure to only mushroom the tip just a little bit when securing.
