Tech Talk: More Smiles per Gallon

One of the most common desires we see from our customers is to go further on a tank of gas. While many of you install a larger fuel tank on your bike, improving your MPG will also help extend your range.

There are a few simple maintenance items that can make a big difference in getting better MPG.

#1 is a clean air filter. A good, clean air filter will allow your engine to breathe more easily, improving its operating efficiency.

#2 is correct tire pressure. Tire pressures that are too low creates unnecessary drag as the weight of you and your bike deform the rubber as your tires roll, wasting energy.

#3 is chain & sprockets. Keeping these clean, lubed, and adjusted, as needed, will also reduce drag and help your bike operate more efficiently.

Other factors that can help (or hurt) MPG are good spark plugs, a tuned motor, a properly jetted carburetor, good wheel bearings, correct suspension set-up, correct gas usage, correct motor oil, avoiding ultra-wide luggage, and riding style. Keeping us with these details is easy to do, and will offer great mileage benefits.
