Tech Talk: Tanks a Lot!

In this month's Tech Talk, Carl discusses aftermarket tank options and accessories to give you more riding range.

The limited capacities of stock fuel tanks are often a huge limiting factor for your dual-sport. Most riders travel 40-50 miles just to reach trailheads where off-road adventures begin, consuming significant fuel before the fun starts. Aftermarket tanks solve this problem by providing substantially more capacity.

First, don't let weight concerns deter you from upgrading your fuel tank. Let's compare some actual numbers for the DR650 as an example. A stock tank weighs 9.4 pounds empty and 27.2 pounds when full with its 3.4-gallon capacity. Since an aftermarket 3.7 gallon Clarke tank weighs only 4.5 pounds empty, it can hold more fuel and still come in about the same weight fully-loaded. Even larger tanks like the 6.6-gallon Acerbis option, which provide over 300 miles of range, only adds about 20 pounds when fully loaded.

Installing proper filtration on your new tank is another worthwhile upgrade. Tank filters that fit inside the cap catch debris and sludge from gas station pumps before it enters your fuel system. An inline fuel filter on the fuel line acts as another safeguard to prevent any debris from getting into your carburetor and engine.

Next, be sure to use high-quality fuel lines that are designed for modern gasoline. Choose lines that resist UV rays, don't kink easily, and won't crack or split from today's fuel additives. Secure everything with proper clamps to prevent a fuel leak from developing right above your engine.

If you use a tank bag, consider tanks with locking gas caps that have venting on the underside rather than the top. This allows you to mount luggage without interfering with the venting system while also providing theft and tamper protection.

Lastly, consider translucent "natural" colored tanks that allow you to easily monitor your fuel level visually, making fuel management much simpler during long adventures.
