Tech Talk: Gimme a Brake!

In this month's tech talk, Carl discusses various options to help improve your braking performance.

One of the first improvements you can make is to upgrade your brake lines to stainless steel. Most dual-sport bikes come with rubber brake lines from the factory. Because rubber flexes, when you squeeze your brake lever, some of the hydraulic force goes to expanding the rubber brake line instead of into the brake piston, reducing the amount of clamping force acting on the rotor. Additionally, the flex in the hose reduces the amount of feedback you get from your brakes. Upgrading to stainless steel lines removes the flex, improving feedback and increasing the amount of braking force transmitted to the piston.

Brake rotors are another worthwhile upgrade. Increasing the diameter of the brake rotor gives the caliper more leverage to bite into the rotor and slow down your motorcycle. Also, the larger size of the rotor gives it more ability to absorb and dissipate the heat generated from braking, reducing brake fade. Most stock rotors are made from a single piece of steel. Upgraded two-piece rotors provide many benefits, including reduced weight, better heat dissipation, and lower risk of warping.

Lastly, you should consider upgrading your brake pads. Sintered brake pads undergo a treatment process that improves their ability to grip well during all kinds of conditions, including hot, cold, and wet.

While you are working on your brakes, be sure to invest in a brake bleeding tool to make the job of bleeding your brakes easier.
